Experimenting with Norns

There comes a time when just letting Norns go about their normal lives becomes routine, to say the least. You want to push them to their evolutionary potential fast, so you pic the ones that look cute and have the traits you want and let 'em go at it like a pack of bunnies. Okay, then what? You could use the Genetic Preview Kit to manipulate their genes, but that feels like too much dry science. You wanna watch your critters develop in steps, not just one big evolutionary leap. Here are some of my ongoing experiments, and my ideas for future ones.

Lower Pigmentation|More Genes|More Receptors|More Reactors|Future Experiments

Lower Pigmentation

My Norns started out with 12 pigment genes, and I've gotten them as low as 8. The following is a list of my Norns with fewer than 12 genes:
  • Darla (the first to show this mutation)
  • Ella
  • Etch
  • Erp
  • Funk
  • Fifi
  • Floop
  • Dia
  • Ducky
  • Dewey

Greater Number of Genes

My Norns started out with 264 total genes for males, 267 genes for females, the extra female genes (Presumably the chemical receptors, emmiters, and reactors offset by the greater number of instinct genes in the males). The following is a list of my Norns with the males having greater than 269, females greater than 270. The rapid increase in my Norns is mostly due to the genes of Sandy and Aaron, the Purple Mountain Norns, in my family.
  • Brutus (269)
  • Danny
  • Dinky
  • Eek
  • Hal
  • Corey (270)
  • Fletch
  • Fifi (271)
  • Ella
  • Darla
  • Cyra (272)
  • Etch
  • Essa
  • Feral
  • Fye (273)

Increased Chemical Receptors

The standard for this gene was 42female/40male. I've increased them to 43/41.
  • Femme
  • Fye
  • Etch
  • Cory
  • Fletch
On a side note, Gee (female) decreased to 41.

Chemical Reactors

The standard for this gene was 56female/55male. I've increased them 61/60.
  • Brutus
  • Cyra
  • Cory
  • Darla
  • Deril
  • Ella
  • Ducky
  • Danny
  • Dinky
  • Essa
  • Etch
  • Eek
  • Erp
  • Feral
  • Fifi
  • Fletch
  • Floop
  • Freddy
  • Hal

Future Experiments

  • Rainbow Norns
Using the genome list provided by Sandra Linkletter (see my links section for Slink's Online Burrow) and the Geneitc Preview Kit from Cyberlife, I hatched Extreme Colored Norns - All Colors "white", No Colors "black", All Red, Green, or Blue, or No Red, Green, or Blue. So I'll breed them all together, and see what I come up with and I'll post my findings here.
  • Color Weirdness
Just what are the coloring limitations of Norns? Not just Extreme Color Norns, but what about patterns, hues, etc? For example, what if I combine ECN's with Norns with fewer pigments genes? Greater genes? If anyone has any natural Norns (no gene tinkering) with more than 12 pigment genes, please send them to me! :)
  • Hearty Norns
This is where my experiments may turn cruel. I want Hearty Norns using survival of the fittest. I will first try to increase the instincts of Norns (Sandra Linkletter, again, provides a male and female with such improvements on her page; goto my links page.) so that they can eat on their own (semi-feral "wolfling" Norns). Then, I'll hit them with toxins and antigens, and see which (if any) survive. I'm not interested in making Highlander (immortal) Norns, but ones that would survive in a hostile environment.
  • Super-Intelligent Norns
Not necessarily multi-lobed Norns, but perhaps if I breed some naturally, I'll use them. I'm not quite sure how to go about this, considering that there isn't much to demonstrate Norn intelligence. With the Super-Speach-Toy (available at the Norn Underground from my links page, we can teach Norns all the verbs (plus more) from the computer, nouns of the categories (food, mover, music, etc), and all of their physical-emotional states (hot, lonely, cold, sad, etc). What else is there to measure Norn intelligence? How fast they learn at the computer (the Speach toy implants the word right into their vocabulary). Or how quickly they learn to use the lifts and not be stuck down by the DeathCap mushroom cuz they don't know how to go up ("pull lift"). Or if they can learn different areas of Albia - imagine saying "Binky run Garden" when he's infatuated with the lifts under the Island, and having him go there. Or maybe they can learn the names for everything, and everyone, not just categories like food, Norn, Grendel, etc. Until Norns can actually use 38 lobes in their brain, we won't have Super-Intelligent Norns. :(
  • Sleep-Active Norns
You've seen your Norns turn around a lot in your sleep, perhaps even get up and walk a little. Is this genetic, or the result of their dreams? What do Norns dream about? Anyways, if I breed Norns that habitually toss and turn in their sleep, what will happen?

If anyone has any comments on my experiments, or would like any individual Norns instead of getting the whole family, please e-mail me.

All Norns harmed in these experiments were used for the advancement of science, and should be given their proper honor. Any that did not die an agonizing death by toxins, antigens, starvation, etc but where horribly maimed in the process to the extent to which every moment was spent in excruciating pain and neurosis were humanely euthenized via the delete key.
